Woodland Management
![]() Woodland conservation and management is an important and worthwhile task for any landowner who is lucky enough to own an area of woods or forest. Less than a third of the woodland in the UK is owned by the state, so private landowners have a big say in the future of our forests and woods.
We are fortunate to have a fair number of woodland areas and copses in the Horsham area, providing peace and beauty for all to enjoy. Research has proved that spending time in a woodland environment brings both physical and mental benefits to humans – and probably animals too! It’s sad to report, though, that the UK is the least-wooded country in Europe, so we need to take great care of the woods we have – much of which in the Horsham area is precious ancient woodland. Did you know that only 11.7% of the UK is tree covered, whilst the average in Europe is four times that, with worldwide coverage being 30% of the earth surface? That makes it even more important to take care of the trees in Horsham. The Woodland Trust is working to establish new forests around the country and we applaud their efforts to bring a greener and healthier future for us all. Trees bring a variety of tangible benefits, including timber for all manner of uses and fulfilling the increasing demands for fuel for traditional heating methods and logs for woodburners. As well as serving the needs of man, when well-managed, trees provide valuable shelter and food for wildlife, improve air quality for us all by storing carbon and even mitigating flooding in some areas. Although West Sussex was historically covered in trees, to give the best returns and to gain the most rewards from the limited areas of forestry surviving today, it’s necessary to look after the trees, clear undergrowth, coppice where necessary and generally manage your woodland. Sustainable forest management can have many different objectives so we discuss with the landowner exactly what they require from the land. Are you looking for a block of amenity woodland to conserve wildlife and provide recreation or do you want to put your woods to work? You may want to use your land for shooting and need a game management strategy or perhaps you plan to produce timber or fuel for your own or commercial use. We will help you determine the best way to produce a sustainable woodland which will thrive for future generations. Horsham Tree Surgeons are experts at woodland management and can take care of every facet of tree care, coppicing, undergrowth clearance and management of invasive species like rhododendron and brambles. We have the equipment and expertise to plant new woodland trees and manage their growth in an efficient and cost-effective manner. We’d love to hear from you if you’d like to establish a substantial new wood or a small copse on your property. Free advice is always available.
